With nothing else currently on the market like it, the Nutriwok combines the culinary expertise of Ken Hom with an accredited nutritionist, Wynnie Chan, to provide consumers not only the right equipment to cook with, but also informative and practical advice to ensure they can cook up a health stir fry.
The book contains 40 unique recipes developed by Ken Hom & Wynnie Chan to cater of all cooking abilities, meal occasions and tastes.
Why has it been developed?
Healthy eating continues to be a growing trend and it has always been said that stir frying was one of the healthiest ways of preparing food but no one has taken this any further to date.
There was a gap in the market for a complete “healthy pack” including cookware, utensils, healthy recipes and informative dietary advice and who else better to front it than the world’s authority in Chinese Cooking – Ken Hom.
Hopefully it will encourage people to be conscious about their health and diet but also to learn that eating healthily doesn’t have to mean bland and unexciting food.
How does it differ from other woks on the market?
The key difference is that the Nutriwok is a complete package and therefore more than just a wok. It is very much marketed as a healthy eating kit as opposed to a stand alone piece of cooking equipment.
Who is the Nutriwok designed for?
The Nutriwok is designed for anyone who is looking for additional help in maintaining a balanced and healthy diet and perhaps looking for some inspiration to inject into their usual food & cooking habits.
It is also great for stir-fry connoisseurs to try out some new and original dishes as well as anyone who lacks confidence in stir-fry cooking and would like some additional help from the expert himself, Ken Hom.
It is ideal for busy mum’s looking to create some healthy dishes for the kids as well as anyone else who appreciates quick and easy meals – so everyone really!
What is the DVD for?
The DVD offers a ‘one off’ opportunity to see Ken cooking in his own home in the South of France. Giving everyone the chance to see how the ‘expert’ does it, as he creates some of the recipes contained in the book, he also offers his own expertise in stir-fry cooking.
Did Ken Hom develop the recipes?
Ken wrote the recipes in conjunction with Wynnie. The key was that each recipe was easy to cook, tasty and healthy, with no compromise on flavour.
What was Wynnie Chan’s role?
Wynnie Chan is an accredited and registered public health nutritionist, based in Hong Kong. The key USP behind the Nutriwok kit is that it combines the culinary expertise of Ken Hom whilst also offering Wynnie’s nutritional expertise.
As part of the introduction to the book Wynnie has provided some useful diet know-how’s including what exactly a ‘portion’ of fruit and vegetables equate to as well as what a healthy diet consists of. In addition Wynnie has also noted some simple and effective ‘Healthy Habits’ which anyone can incorporate into their daily diets, whether it is changing your eating habits slightly or changing the methods used to cook in order to maintain a healthier eating plan.
Wynnie worked closely with Ken to deliver a detailed nutritional breakdown for each of the 40 recipes (including calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, protein, fibre and sodium) so that people know exactly what they are eating.
Wynnie was also able to provide nutritional facts on individual ingredients as well as offer healthier substitutions to ensure that the recipe book offered both practical advice as well as educating people on the importance of a balanced and healthy diet and how to eat more healthily while using a wok.

Is Chinese food healthy?
The traditional Chinese diet is based on vegetables and grain foods, with meats and high fat foods used as garnishes and flavourings rather than mainstay ingredients. There is increasing scientific evidence to show that this type of low fat, high fibre diet is beneficial to health, with a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancers.
Unfortunately as countries have become more Westernised, the proportions of foods that we eat have changed so that we now have an overemphasis on foods that are high in fat, salt and protein.
What is Ken’s favourite recipe from the book?
Ken’s favourite recipe is the 10 Minute Salmon because not only is it amazingly quick and easy to make but the ingredients are all easily available. A truly delicious dish that Ken likes so much he regularly makes it when he has friends over for dinner.
What is the healthiest recipe in the book?
Eating a healthy diet means including a variety of foods that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. There are no good or bad foods only healthy or unhealthy diets. Balance is the key to keeping healthy so that means making sensible choices at each meal and throughout the day. So a balanced dinner could be mango beef, bright pepper and green stir fry and rice or a healthy light lunch could be stir fried noodles and Chinese style asparagus salad.
What are the health benefits of Chinese cooking?
Often touted as the healthy way to fry, stir frying needs only a small amount of oil to cook foods quickly at a high heat. Because it’s one of the fastest ways to cook, vitamin-rich veggies retain more nutrients, as well as their texture and colour. A stir-fry recipe requires only one to two tablespoons of oil. This relatively small amount of oil not only cooks the meat, but any vegetables you may want to throw in as well.
Steaming is also a technique that is often used in Chinese cooking. Steaming preserves the vitamins and minerals in foods. It is also healthy because you do not have to add any oils or fats. The steam can actually help melt some of the excess fats in foods, which end up in the water that was heated to make the steam. Steaming also helps to concentrate the intrinsic flavor of foods.
Are stir fry’s quite time consuming to make?
It depends on the dish. Generally the most time consuming part of a stir-fry is the preparation and you need to make sure you have everything chopped and ready to go before you start. If it’s just stir frying vegetables, once you get your wok heated up, it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes on a high heat.
Nowadays so many supermarkets sell pre chopped vegetables that it really is so simple and quick.
The key is to make sure your wok and oil is extremely hot so the food begins cooking as soon as it is put and therefore speeds up the cooking time.
Does the recipe book cater for vegetarians?
Yes, the book contains 40 recipes which are all divided into different chapters – soups, fish, poultry, meat, vegetables, rice, noodles and desserts so there really is something for any occasion, taste and dietary requirements.
